Students’ Day in the Islamic Republic of Iran
(ABAN 13) and International Students’ Day

I would like to congratulate all students of Iran on the occasion of the 13th of Aban - Students’ Day

November 17 is a day for the international observance of student activism.

In 1941, November 17 was declared International Students Day by the International Students Council in London, which became the starting point of the founding of the International Union of Students.

On November 17, 1939, students' resistance in the streets of Prague against Nazi occupation inspired the establishment of an anti-Nazi students’ coalition. The demonstration was held to commemorate the creation of an independent Czechoslovak Republic.

The date commemorates the anniversary of the 1939 Nazi storming of the University of Prague after demonstrations against the killing of Jan Opletal and the occupation of Czechoslovakia, and the execution of nine student leaders, over 1200 students sent to concentration camps, and the closing of all Czech universities and colleges.

The day was first marked in 1941 in London by the International Students' Council (which had many refugee members) in accord with the Allies, and the tradition has been kept up by the successor International Union of Students, which has been pressing with National Unions of Students in Europe and other groups to make the day an official United Nations observance

Today, International Students' Day is treated as an international observance of student activism, in a manner different than its original meaning. A number of universities around the world observe it as a nonpolitical celebration of the multiculturalism of their international students.

NATIONAL STUDENTS’ DAY IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN AND THE OCCUPATION OF THE SPY NEST

Aban 13, coinciding with November 4, was announced as ‘National Students’ Day’ in Iran in 1979.

A message given on November 3, 1979 Imam Khomeini (r.a) said:

“It is incumbent upon pupils, those affiliated with universities and theological students to spread their attack against the U.S. and Israel with full power, in order to force the U.S. into extraditing this criminal deposed Shah.

The students who took the Spy Nest released a statement, saying:

We, the Muslim Stu dents Followers of the Line of Imam Khomeini in support of the Imam’s decisive stances against the world oppressing US. Government and in protest of the Imperialistic and Zionistic plots, have seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in order to deliver our protest to the ears of the people of the world …

  • Objecting to the U.S. for granting refuge to and making use of the      criminal Shah who is the killer of tens of thousands of men and women in      this country …
  • Objecting to the U.S. for making one-sided poisonous propaganda      against the Islamic Revolution of Iran and supporting counter      revolutionaries and those who fled

Objecting to the U.S. government for unmanly conspiracies and intrigues in various parts of our country an
